SFFS: Snippet of “Aislyn and the Space Pirates”

Science Fiction & Fantasy Saturday

Welcome back to another Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday! Next week, I will be attending ConQuest. I am not sure at this point if I will be posting next weekend. Then again, I may just pre-schedule the next snippet and let it be. We’ll see what happens.

Today’s excerpt continues from last week’s post. When last we left our heroes, Aislyn and Marcus were discussing options on how to deal with the ultimatum just presented to them from the other ship, and they have sixty seconds in which to make a decision.

If you are just now joining us and want to catch up, you can read the previous snippets in this series by clicking the links below.

And now, here is this week’s snippet. Enjoy!

“They can outgun us and eventually outrun us. Maybe if we hide near the star…or that anomaly we’re flyin’ to, we can avoid them long enough to get away.” Aislyn tried to sound optimistic, more to convince herself than him.
“Maybe, if we can get there before they shoot us out of the stars.”
  “How far away are they?”
He returned to the sensors. “Fifty thousand clicks and closing.”
  “How far to the anomaly?”
Oscar cut in. “Estimated distance is one hundred five million kilometers.”
“So as long as we stay outside their weapons range, do you think we can make it to the anomaly before them?”
“Aislyn, may I remind you that they’re in a military-grade ship? Their weapons range may be greater than ours.”
She looked at him and narrowed her eyes. “You’re not helpin’.”

  1. Peter Vialls says:

It’s tough being optimistic when someone keeps pointing out the hard facts! And I like the way you gently remind us of Aislyn’s accent without making a big point of it – I’m automatically reading her dialogue and hearing an Irish brogue.

  2. T. M. Hunter says:

Love the interaction between the two. It’s also hard to be optimistic when you’re verbally sparring with a computer…such cold-hearted and logical beasts they are.

  3. S.A. Check says:

Love the way the dialogue is working between the three of them, sharp, fast, and smart. Looks like they’ll be making a run for it. Somehow I doubt if it’ll be a smooth escape. Fun stuff, enjoying the read!

  4. JC Cassels says:

    “You’re not helpin’.”
    I love that!
You do a great job of painting an impossible situation and her desperation to get out unscathed.

  5. This is expected to be an uninhabited system?
