SFFS: Snippet from “Alone in Paradise”

Welcome back to another weekly scifi/fantasy snippet! I hope you enjoy it.

This week, I return to the second book titled ALONE IN PARADISE. Remember Anna taking over the ship’s computer and being offered the option of choosing an avatar? This snippet looks into her selection process.

A half-second passed before a short, middle-aged woman with brown hair tied into a bun on the back of her head displayed in full color in the middle of the bridge. She wore a long, black dress and, despite appearing old and plain, demonstrated some charm in her face.
The computer announced, “Marie Curie, Polish physicist. Born 7 November 1867. Died 4 July 1934. Achievements: Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and in Chemistry in 1911. Only person in the 20th century to win Nobel Prizes in two sciences.”
Anna looked at Marie for a long moment, wondering if she would be comfortable with a scientist aboard her ship. At first, she thought it would be nice having an intelligent woman on board, but then remembered that she would only be accessing the information the ship’s computer had available to it.
“May I hear her voice?” Anna inquired.

Ack! What a spot to cut off the snippet… 🙂
Reminds me a little bit of the ST:TNG episode where Geordi sets up a holodeck program with a “famous” person whom he falls in love with before she shows up for real. At least Anna won’t have to worry about that, if she picks Marie…at least we hope not (for the showing up part). 😀

Interesting scenario, sounds like a great concept. First sentence description may be a little long in that I thought I read that it was the back of her head that was “displayed in full color in the middle of the bridge.” The phase should probably follow immediately after “middle aged woman.”

Great snippet. Wouldn’t that be interesting! To have someone famous to talk to or spend time with…cool! Aston, I think I remember that episode too.

  4. Cassandra Davis says:

I like it, but I cannot see Anna hanging out with (computerized) Marie Curie for very long– not the way Anna treats her binary companions.

  5. JC Cassels says:

Great snippet, but for a minute I was expecting her to be Queen Victoria!! Great snippet. I can’t wait to see what Anna chose.

  6. Color? And she died in 1934? Must have been colorized.

  7. So, is it a talking image or hologram?

  8. Pippa Jay says:

Having a famous scientist around would make me feel rather inferior.

  9. Misa says:

Can the avatar not be changed once it’s chosen? Just asking because it would be cool to cycle through a bunch of dead famous people. Kinda like Bill and Ted…
